Free Walking Tours of Betts Park - In Common - On the Common
Saturday 24 June 2023
11:00 to 12:00
Part of the London Festival of Architecture. A one-hour stroll around 13 acres of public park which was once part of the ancient Penge Common; now surrounded by 19th century villas, 1970s social housing and the remains of the Croydon Canal. The quirks of history somehow allowed Betts Park to survive enclosure, a Victorian land-grab, and heavy WW2 bombing.
Join a relaxing walk, guided by a community volunteer from the Friends of Betts Park, to hear the story of why it exists and tales of the common people who made it happen - mostly by accident. The tour is free and suitable for people with limited mobility. Dogs are welcome and there is plenty of space for picnicking. If you enjoy the tour, you can make a donation to Friends of Betts Park which will be used for future improvements.
